2025 IS FOR ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS. RIGHTS. EQUALITY. EMPOWERMENT.

This is your call to join us for a year of action

Sima Bahous UN Women

At our current pace, a girl born today will be nearly 40 years old before women hold as many seats in parliament as men.

She will be 68 before child marriage is eradicated. She will never live to see the end of extreme poverty for women and girls—a goal that, at this rate, will take another 137 years to achieve.

The backlash against gender equality is growing, and faith in multilateralism is faltering.

This is the world we are living in—a world we cannot and will not accept. We cannot allow this to continue. We will not wait.

Thirty years ago, world leaders committed to a future where women’s rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment was the reality for all women and girls.

A scene from the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China on 5 September 1995

That vision was enshrined in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—a revolutionary framework that remains unmatched in ambition

In 2025, that vision is at risk of slipping through our fingers. Progress for women and girls has been made, but it has been slow, fragile, and uneven.

The hard truth is this: our world is failing women and girls.

The backlash against gender equality is growing. We need you to stand against it.

This is not the time for incremental change—it is the time for transformation.

We will not stop until gender equality is a reality for every woman and girl, everywhere. Because the stakes are too high, and the cost of inaction is too great.

For All Women and Girls—A Digital Revolution

Technology must be a force for equality, not exclusion.

For All Women and Girls—Freedom from Poverty

Closing care gaps could create 300 million jobs by 2035 and transform economies.

For All Women and Girls—Zero Violence

Governments must not only legislate—they must enforce, fund, and implement.

We will accept no less.

For All Women and Girls—Full and Equal Decision-Making Power

Women in power bring diverse voices, innovative solutions, and better outcomes. Parity in decision-making is non-negotiable and a key starting point for equal sharing power.

For All Women and Girls—Peace and Security

Women’s organisations are the first responders to crises and the champions of peace. Yet they remain underfunded and undervalued.

For All Women and Girls— Climate Justice

As the climate crisis accelerates, it is women and girls— especially in rural and indigenous communities—who bear the brunt of its devastating effects. Women and girls must be at the centre of climate solutions.

Cross-Cutting Lever: Adolescent girls & young women

Adolescent girls and young women are not just the future—they are the present. Their voices, their leadership, and their education must be at the forefront of our efforts.

The world cannot wait for another 30 years to fulfil the promise of gender equality

Today we stand stronger, more united, more diverse, and determined to become the first generation to achieve gender equality

We need the political will now to deliver Agenda 2030 commitment for an equal world.

We need $360 billion annually to close the gender gap by 2030. This is not a cost—it is an investment in our collective survival and prosperity.

We must arm ourselves with evidence. The gender data gap is a gaping hole in our ability to track and drive progress. Filling it is not optional—it is essential.

The Action Agenda is not just a collection of high ideals—these are urgent imperatives.

Achieving gender equality is not an option. It is the foundation for addressing every global challenge we face, from poverty to conflict to climate change.

This is not the time for incremental change—it is the time for transformation. We will not stop until gender equality is a reality for every woman and girl, everywhere. Because the stakes are too high, and the cost of inaction is too great.

Let history remember 2025 as the year we refused to give up—as the year we achieved the promise of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

UN Women UK: the only organisation working towards gender equality at all levels, in all areas of society

Right now, we’re facing a 300-year wait for gender equality.

Women’s rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world. Progress won over decades is vanishing before our eyes.

Here at UN Women UK, we’re combating this through collective action at all levels of society – from governments to corporates, communities to individuals.

We’re here to ensure that every woman and girl has access to safety, choice and a voice. In the UK and around the world.
