Who We Are

"Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right, it is a social and economic imperative"

- Ban Ki-Moon, Former UN Secretary-General

We are UN Women, the global champion for gender equality.

UN Women was created in 2010 to direct UN activities on gender equality issues. Before then, no one organisation had the authority to promote gender equality on a global scale and address the serious challenges facing women and girls everywhere.

Our aim is to remove the social and cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their potential. These barriers exist in public policy, educational opportunity, conscious or unconscious bias, and economic empowerment.

We will have achieved gender equality when women do not experience violence in their homes, when they share unpaid care work with men and are represented at the highest levels of business and politics. Despite positive change, no country in the world has yet achieved gender equality, and the pace of change is frustratingly slow.

As a champion for women and girls, we are a powerful voice at global, regional and local levels. Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the UN Charter, we aim to eliminate discrimination against women and girls. Women should be partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security.

UN Women in the UK

In the UK, UN Women is represented through the National Committee.

We focus on:

We raise awareness of the issues, the challenges and the solutions developed by and through UN Women and our partners.

We speak up with and for others, encouraging governments, the private sector and individuals to support our work here and around the world.

We share what we learn and raise funds for our important work to achieve gender equality.

Gender inequality affects everyone. We know the conversation isn't over and there is still so much to do. We need your help.

Connect with us, share your ideas, and join us in creating new and better ways to achieve gender equality. Help us by donating your knowledge, your time and your money to programmes here in the UK and around the world.

The Annual Reports document UN Women’s work to foster women’s empowerment and gender equality around the world.

It highlights some of the organization’s initiatives during the year and provides summary financial statements, a list of new programmes and projects, and contact information.
